WY Quality Counts

“You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.”

We began partnering with WY Quality Counts in 2011 to help the statewide public information program grow public awareness of its mission: to promote the importance of interactive and enriching child care environments.

As a government program, WYQC regularly collaborates with other government agencies and NGO across Wyoming; as one facet of our partnership, we help WYQC build and cultivate these relationships. For one campaign, developed to engage with Wyoming public libraries, we created literacy materials that could be used in homes, libraries and classrooms.

Introducing Chuck & Pepper

With feedback and support from local librarians and early childhood experts, we generated a capsule campaign based around WYQC’s adventure-loving mascots, including a unique storybook and board book for younger readers, a package of educational materials, library check-out kits for families, classroom kits for teachers and child care providers, and story time kits for library storytellers, complete with Linden-designed Chuck & Pepper puppets.

At campaign launch:

  • 1,000 classroom kits were distributed to 691 active child care centers and Head Start groups;
  • 125 story time kits were distributed to 75 libraries; and
  • 250 check out kits were distributed to 32 libraries,

All that adds up to vast potential for reaching Wyoming families, early education advocates and countless children, spreading WYQC’s message of nurturing early literacy in children.

“You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.”

And all that was just the start. We consider this literacy campaign an ongoing, immersive PR and partnership building strategy. To keep the campaign fresh and to maintain our relationships with Wyoming public libraries and child care providers, we often reach out to ensure they have all the physical pieces of their kits that they need, offering to ship additional quantities (for free) if desired. We’ve also made placing a free reorder easy on the WYQC website.

To support the campaign in other ways, we share local library information on WYQC’s social media feeds, we conduct mini-campaigns with the libraries to get kids and their parents to interactive story times, and we continually promote the importance of reading and literacy in print ads, original videos and creative social media posts.
